Ready for the second part of the
GardenWalk?...

{amazing carriage house}
{100 year old fountain}

{love the gray-blue color with the brick!}

{so creative--two walls covered in hanging baskets}

{one of my favorite combinations of all--the peeling
blue-gray paint revealing brick, the roses, and
the very rustic trellis!}
{would love to find a spot for an old chair with
pots like this one}

{a cool outdoor kitchen sink}

Thanks for coming along :)

garden walk ~ part one

Sunday was a beautiful escape from the
busyness that life has lately been...
we headed to one of the largest garden tours
in the country.
For me, it's as much about the architecture
as it is about the gorgeous landscape.
Let's venture through the garden gate...

Coming soon, Part II...

My Favorite Colorwork Book

Laurie asked me a week or two ago what my favorite colorwork pattern book is.  I think my favorite colorwork pattern book is Nancy Bush's Folk Knitting in Estonia. It definitely is my most abused book as you can see from the photo below.

I think I've knit more items from the book than any other book. I did a little photo montage of some of the projects I've done from the book below - there were more but some were finished long before I had a blog. It seems so weird now to even think of knitting something and not getting photographs of it, doesn't it? Actually most of the images aren't even photographs - when I first started this blog many years ago I didn't have a camera so I just shoved everything in the scanner. You can click on the photo to see a larger version.

Even though I'm probably done knitting the projects, I still consult Folk Knitting in Estonia on a regular basis. She included all sorts of technique goodness like different kinds of braiding and multi-colored cast ons. I keep hoping she does another colorwork book very, very soon.

Monster Parts

If you guessed that I was making the Daphne and Delilah monster pattern
from this blog post, you are correct my friend!
I am now done with all of the knitting. All that is left is the sewing up.. sigh...

A big D

A big D

Did anyone spot my big mistake?

And that's not a old British tea make? (Maybe I dreamt that strap line).

The d is for dyslexic....... dyslexic frustration.

Vivacious, was going so well I corrected my mistake (earlier post) so I thought.

C was in the wrong place originally,fixed that, but I missed the biggy.

S?, in fact it's actually a 2.................now how did that happen.

(I really could have sat an cried, but oh how quickly I got on, lifes to short)

Knit happens!

A Major mistake as my S is in fact backwards.

And as I work backwards, yes you guessed it!!!

It was indeed the 1st letter that I attached.

So Basically it's staying, embrace your mistakes and work with them.

An excellent way to start my re-patronisation knitting.........wrong.

To my lunch

Jamie would be pleased I think at my preparation of a cheese Ploughman's.

CIOU2

It reads like some type of chemical equation .

But I'm over that and on to my new chapter.......

I found the perfect knit Cafe:-)

Or maybe it found me, all new to me Knitting in the UK, but as luck would have it I think I found something to do on a Wednesday evening;-)

Which is Great, sort my knit contacts and the rest will just fall into place.

End, end, ends......

Lots to do and lots to stitch in,

so this week I have been mainly sowing in my ends.

The little cute sheep and ram where taken at Beale park, all very cute and seeing

as I feature so much knit/crochet I figured maybe its time to promote the source.

Rasmus
trying to look like a guard dog which is very funny seeing he is frightened of everything. he is having a blast since our return to UK probably the Happiest Friday member as he is being introduced to lots of new places(of the lead) and more importantly new dogs.

In My Mailbox (32)

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren, and is a way for everyone to show their new books for the week, including those bought, swapped, won, or received for review.

"Emma and the Vampires" by Wayne Josephson and Jane Austen

I've already read this one and Sourcebooks sent me a brand new finished copy for a contest to go along with my review!! Check back the first week of August for the contest!!

"All I Ever Wanted" by Kristan Higgins
This one was sent by Julie at FSB. Doesn't it look so comfy and cute! I always love this author's covers!!

"One Day" by David Nicholls

I was so excited to win this one in a contest from the publisher! It's already being chatted about in all the magazines AND there's already a film version in the works!!

What did you receive in your mailbox this week??

AND if you haven't entered already: One more week for the huge RITA nominee giveaway!!

Fiber But No Knitting

I've been spinning some of the wool roving I purchased at Looking Glass Yarns on a drop spindle. I am not very talented at plying with a drop spindle so my resulting yarn isn't even enough for colorwork but I am in love with the seafoam color. I think it will end up as mittens or socks. The roving is Mauch Chunky by Kraemer Yarns.

I've also been working on some crewel embroidery. I was hoping I'd be finished with this pillow top last month but I'm only about 1/3 done at this point. It is greatly enjoyable even if I'm still not 100% happy with my long and short stitch. If you look at the yellow part of the flower on the bottom left (where I started) you'll see that I didn't even understand what the long and short stitch was. Initially I was thinking of ripping it out and re-doing that flower but decided against it. Because really what are the odds someone will be visiting me, pick up the pillow, and exclaim in horror that I did one of the flowers wrong???

I hope to have some colorwork socks (Robyn Gallimore's Winter Dreams Socks) to show you soon.

your questions

There were several questions from the last
post, so I thought I would answer them here
in case anyone else was wondering the same.

How do I freeze my broccoli?
After removing any leaves and woody stalk,
I soak the broccoli heads in a salt/water
brine {1 cup salt to 1 gallon water} for
about a half hour.  This gets rid of any
insects or those unpleasant little green
worms.  I then rinse the broccoli, and
cut the heads into smaller pieces.
I put them into a pot of boiling water
and scald for about 3 - 4 minutes,
then immediately immerse the broccoli in
some ice water to cool.  It's now ready
to drain and pack into your freezer containers.
This year, I laid all the broccoli pieces out in
a single layer on baking sheets which I placed in
the freezer.  As soon as the broccoi was frozen, I placed
it all in a very large freezer bag--later it
will be easy to just take out as much as I need.
I have also used my vacuum sealer in the past, and
that does do a better job preventing freezer
burn--I just didn't have the special bags on hand
this time.
Can you tell me how you freeze grated zucchini?
After washing the zucchinis {I leave the skin on}
and cutting off the ends, I grate it using
my food processor.  Then I just put it in a freezer
container or bag and freeze--super easy.
This year, I vacuum sealed mine in glass pint
canning jars.  I really like the idea of using
glass versus plastic, the jars were cheap from a
yard sale & are resusable, and the vacuum seal,
as I mentioned, will help prevent freezer burn.
Is it possible for you to share your recipe for
the refrigerator pickles?
I found the recipe here last year.  This year I
did alter it--I omitted the pickling spice {as
I wanted more of a plain dill} and I tried
cutting the sugar amount in half {they were
too sweet for us}.

Do you just know how to freeze the zucchini and blueberries or do you recommend a source of info?
I couldn't do it without my Ball Blue Book!
I'm sure there are many resources online for
home canning and freezing, but I have used
this book forever, and I love having it handy
year after year to look up whatever I need.

Yesterday, I picked blackberries and blueberries.
My next 'preserving project' is to pull out
the dehydrator and dry some blueberries.
I tried it last year for the first time
and loved them--I'll be back with more on
that later...
{Picked the first tomato yesterday!}
